Atlanta Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies informed reporters this weekend that he intends to return to the lineup earlier than the common season concludes on Sept. 29. There’s only one catch: Albies, a pure switch-hitter, can be restricted to batting righty.
“Everyone on the workforce is asking me when I’ll be again,” Albies mentioned, based on MLB.com’s Mark Bowman. “I need to be sure that I can simply verify the bins that have to be checked to be 100% able to play, and that is it.”
Albies, 27, has not appeared on the big-league stage since July 21 after struggling a fractured left wrist. That wrist continues to trouble Albies, albeit solely when he is swinging from the left facet. For his profession, he is been a greater hitter from the precise facet, posting a .947 OPS from that facet versus a .738 OPS from the left facet.
In 90 video games previous to Albies’ deactivation, he had hit .258/.310/.407 (98 OPS+) with eight dwelling runs, 46 runs batted in, and eight stolen bases. His contributions had been price an estimated 1.3 Wins Above Substitute, based on Baseball Reference.
Each Albies and Braves supervisor Brian Snitker informed reporters they’d not mentioned the potential for the hitter batting right-handed. As such, it is to be seen if the Braves’ braintrust shall be as into the concept as Albies himself. The Braves do have incentive to see if Albies can pull it off: they enter Sunday evening’s contest in opposition to the Los Angeles Dodgers with a half-game lead over the New York Mets for the ultimate Nationwide League wild-card spot.
The Braves have, as of late, been reliant upon veteran Whit Merrifield on the keystone. Merrifield, 35, has batted .269/.374/.370 (109 OPS+) in 36 video games with Atlanta. He joined the Braves earlier this summer season after being launched by the Philadelphia Phillies.
